Staff Accountant
Position Title: Staff Accountant
Primary Workstation: 400 Englewood Drive, Frankfort, KY 40601
Job Summary: This position utilizes discretion and independent judgment to maintain the financial and accounting records of various programs and assists in preparing reports from those records for use by management and others. This position addresses tight deadlines of accounting activities including, but not limited to, preparation of journal entries, variance analysis, audit support and compliance with programmatic policies, regulations and acceptable accounting practices. Duties are performed primarily in a normal professional office environment.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Posts daily transactions in the Accounting System.
- Prepares and posts month end journal entry adjustments.
- Ensures the timely reporting of all monthly financial information.
- Analyzes all balance sheet accounts on a monthly basis, including the reconciliation of subsidiary ledgers to the general ledger.
- Analyzes monthly Profit and Loss variance from budget.
- Prepares month and year-end working papers including assets, liabilities, revenues and expenditures.
- Compiles data to aid CFO/Senior Accountant in the preparation of monthly financial statements and other financial reports.
- Maintains financial security by researching and reconciling discrepancies; auditing and verifying documents; and following internal controls.
- Prepares a cash flow for the CFO to ensure availability of funds needed to operate effectively.
- Processes accounts payable and all checks.
- Performs the monthly operating account bank statement reconciliations with G/L deposits, disbursements, transfers and Third Party Administrators (TPA's) monthly claim payment reports.
- Reconciles claims debits to operating accounts with daily TPA reports.
- Monitors the Workers Compensation Dept. of Insurance pledged securities amounts and due dates.
- Assists in the independent audits of the financial statements and the insurances programs’ regulatory agency audits.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

- Thorough understanding of generally accepted accounting principles
- Proficiency with accounting software, word processing and spreadsheets
- Ability to maintain the confidentiality of the Association’s financial information
- Ability to assemble, and prepare routine financial reports
- Ability to interpret and apply regulations and procedures
- Knowledge of applicable federal and state accounting-related compliance processes
- Ability to safely and successfully perform job duties consistent with federal, state and local standards
Education, Experience and Licensing Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related course of study
- 2 years of accounting experience with increasing responsibilities
- Professional designation preferred
- Experience in the insurance industry is preferred.
