About Mecklenburg Electric Cooperative
MEC is a not-for-profit, member-owned electric distribution cooperative serving over 32,000 accounts across portions of nine Southside Virginia counties and five northern North Carolina Counties. MEC was formed in 1938, by the members - for the members, with the mission of providing services and creating opportunities to enhance the quality of life in rural southern Virginia. MEC is headquartered in Chase City, Virginia, with three district offices located in Emporia, Chase City and Gretna, Virginia. The region is uniquely located an hour from Richmond, Va and Raleigh, NC.
Over the last 85 years, MEC has worked tirelessly to meet the needs of its members, including additional services such as telephone in the 1950’s and EMPOWER Broadband, formed in 2018, to close the digital divide throughout the communities served by the cooperative. Today, the for-profit subsidiary serves nearly 6,000 subscribers and is rapidly expanding its service territory across six counties.
About the Region
The rural countryside of service territory boasts a host of activities for the entire family including several state parks, hiking trails, recreational water sports, golf courses, and historical sites. Unique and locally-owned downtown shops, including ice cream, coffee, clothing, home décor and much more, offer something for everyone.
One of our areas strongest assets is its new, state of the art, school facility for middle/high students. Built in 2022, this facility offers our youth a host of educational and recreational opportunities to ensure the students have unlimited opportunities upon graduation.
Surrounded by two of the largest lakes in Virginia and North Caroline, Buggs Isand/Kerr Lake and Lake Gaston is ideal for fishing, camping, boating, kayaking and other water sports. The rural countryside also makes the area perfect for hunting and trail riding. Southside Virginia is a haven for all outdoor sports enthusiasts.
Adult activities include numerous wineries, a distillery, and several breweries.
